David Angel Rodriguez (born 1982), commonly known as "X", is a Let's Player mostly known for creating "X's Adventures in Minecraft", a very popular Minecraft Let's Play series and the second Minecraft survival playthrough on YouTube; only Paul Soares Jr's series came before.

As of this edit, Rodriguez currently stands at 186,065 subscribers.

Personal Information[]

Usernames[]

Rodriguez goes by several screen names: X, which comes from his World of Warcraft character named "Xalamon", Davidr64yt, which stands for "David Rodriguez 64 YouTube" (64 being his favorite number due to the Nintendo 64 being his favorite console), XFromYouTube (used in Planetside and other online games), and Davidangel64 (Angel being Rodriguez's middle name).

Profession[]

Apart from his face, Rodriguez's profession is the most secret aspect of his life. He has stated in various videos and blog posts that he either currently has or previously had a freelance writing business and is/was working at a cell phone company. Whenever Rodriguez's profession is asked in his streams by fans, the most common response is "I go out there and rock face/kick ass."

In past videos, Rodriguez stated that he was not sure if he wanted YouTube to become his full-time job, since it's a hobby and does it for the fun of it and when he feels like it. In a past stream of Dark Souls, David has stated he has a job, but will not disclose any details, and definitely does not make a living off of Youtube or Twitch considering he makes barely a dollar per Twitch stream just from ad revenue.

Rodriguez has hinted at starting a Patreon to make a living, however he feels it would be unethical of him to receive monthly donations while maintaining an irregular online presence.

Residence[]

Rodriguez currently resides in South Texas, USA. At 38 years of age, Rodiguez still lived with his parents, and presumably still does, stating "[I] never found [myself] in a situation where [I] was making...enough money for a consistent amount of time to...[move out]". While initially unhappy and distraught by not having his own place, Rodriguez now embraces his current predicament and encourages others in his position to do the same, stating "Right now, you are exactly where you need to be to get where you're going. It's just truth."

Music[]

It is commonly believed that Rodriguez composed a piece of music called “Warm Rain in a Rust Red Sky” (heard at the beginning of this video). On August 5, 2015, during a livestream, X confirmed that he created it.

YouTube Career[]

Early beginnings (2009-10)[]

Rodriguez joined YouTube on August 31, 2007. He uploaded his first video over two years later on December 3, 2009, titled "X001 - Death Knight farming more than 15g/min in Scholomance, Part 1", which is a World of Warcraft tutorial. The infancy of the channel featured predominantly World of Warcraft videos with sporadic StarCraft uploads as well, before transitioning to it's first play-through, "X Plays Half-Life 2".

Rise to Fame (2010-11)[]

Rodriguez gained a massive fanbase, following the release of his most successful play-through, "X's Adventures in Minecraft". The first episode of the series currently has over 5 million views, and six other videos of this series has surpassed the one million mark. This was uncharted territory for Rodriguez, who was an unknown YouTuber until his sudden surge to fame. The series only lasted one month and consists of 40 episodes, with some episodes being split into two parts. To this day, Rodriguez's 44 most viewed videos are all Minecraft videos from this era of his channel. By 2011, Rodriguez had surpassed 100,000 subscribers due to his new found fame.

Post-Minecraft Era (2011-12)[]

After finishing his first Minecraft series, Rodriguez channel was an unorganised outlet for whatever he felt like playing. He started play-throughs of Duke Nukem 3D, Castlevania, Magicka, StarCraft 2, Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Portal 2, and many more, discontinuing most of them after only a few episodes. None of these play-throughs got close to the amount of success Minecraft had brought the channel.

New Channel Direction (2012-13)[]

On July 16, 2012 Rodriguez uploaded a video titled "New Channel Direction", detailing an attempt to organise the channel to more structured. Retrospectively, this was most likely an attempt to prove to himself Rodriguez could maintain has YouTube channel as a full-time job and to prove he could make a living from his YouTube career. Rodriguez announced he would be uploading on a predetermined schedule, which he would share preceding every week, based on feedback he had received from polls conducted from his audience. This unsurprisingly resulted in a demand for Minecraft content, which was answered. Unfortunately, this new direction lasted shorter than a month, after which Rodriguez disappeared off of the internet for a month, which he often does. After returning with sporadic League of Legends uploads in September, Rodriguez started two play-throughs in December 2012, Dishonored and Far Cry 3. He fully completed both play-throughs by February 2013, uploading both series every day without break. Both series were highly popular among the dedicated following he had maintained from his Minecraft days, but again received view counts nowhere close to the Minecraft series itself. While Rodriguez had already had over 180,000 subscribers by this point, in reality, the channel resembles that of one with a subscriber count of about 20,000, as the vast majority of his subscriber base was solely interested in Minecraft content, which Rodriguez had completely neglected up until now, outside of short reboot during the reorganisation period of the channel.

Streaming Era (2013-15)[]

After having completed two full-length play-throughs Rodriguez went back to uploading sporadically for a year, focussing mainly on PlanetSide 2 content. He also started Dishonored DLC and Far Cry 4 play-throughs which are both discontinued and did not last long. For this period in his career, Rodriguez had no structure to his channel and again only uploaded what he felt like playing at the time. This era also featured very short play-throughs of various indie games. This period of Rodriguez's channel later contained highlight clips of moments caught on his live stream, and also some League of Legends gameplay as always. Rodriguez started focussing on streaming as his predominant form of providing entertainment.

Return to YouTube (2016-18)[]

On February 4, 2016, Rodriguez uploaded a video titled "I have no idea what I'm doing with my YouTube channel", expressing his wish to return to YouTube on a more regular basis, and asking has viewers to fill in a poll asking what content they most wanted to see. To the surprise of no-one, Minecraft was the most requested content, and so Rodriguez started another Minecraft series, X's Adventures in Minecraft: Chapter 2, this time lasting only seven videos. Shortly after, Rodriguez completed his AM2R (Metroid 2) series. Afterwards, Rodriguez quickly fell back into his habit of uploading League of Legends gameplay and various indie games with a multitude of breaks, sometimes lasting weeks.

Return to Play-throughs (2019-present)[]

In 2019, Rodriguez uploaded the first video in his Dishonored 2 play-through. While discontinued, this play-through lasted for over 25 episodes, which is considerably longer than most of his unfinished play-throughs. In 2020, Rodriguez fully completed his Mark of the Ninja series, with a standard mix of videos separating the two play-throughs. In 2021, Rodriguez started his third Minecraft series, a hardcore play-through, which is currently ongoing. Rodriguez has announced a new era of his channel, focussing mainly on World of Warcraft content.
